O conservadorismo norte-americano transformou-se num zombie feio. Nas últimas eleições, foi claro o mar de sectarismo em que o Partido Republicano mergulhou. John McCain tentou dar amor a gregos e troianos mas dar amor a gregos e troianos é proibido. É proibido porque é um erro. É um erro porque há sempre uma parte que exige mais concessões, ficando a outra angustiada e com fome. Descobri um artigo recente de Rush Limbaugh que evoca uma das causas desta auto-flagelação: o populismo mascarado de anti-Reaganismo.
«Today the get-beyond-Reagan arguments are often put in so-called pragmatic terms of needing to create blocs of voters who will support the Republican Party. And in order to accomplish this, all that conservatives have to do, these self-proclaimed smart people say, is embrace the idea of big government, because that's what the American people want and because only so-called big-government conservatives will be able to create blocs of voters by spending money to do them favors.»
Isto em termos de intenção. O problema surge nos alvos. A falta de pontaria é óbvia: o Partido Republicano continua a contar com o eleitorado velho e conservador, fechando os olhos ao facto de este conjunto se ter tornado uma minoria. Não há melhor prova disso do que a vitória de Obama, onde o voto jovem, da classe média emancipada e da extensa comunidade de imigrantes foi decisivo. O Partido Republicano tem-se mostrado preocupado em apresentar-se perfumado e elegante, o que, em termos de força política, só denota superficialidade - mais: inconsciência mórbida. O corpo vai caminhando sem a cabeça.
Mas o conservadorismo precisa igualmente de saber sobreviver à ameaça de um equívoco generalizado: confundir liberdade individual com umbiguismo. Muito aproveitamento político se tem feito à custa dele. Como Limbaugh observa, não é um fruto proibido:
«Reagan's main idea was the main idea of the American founding - the idea of individual liberty - and the policies that he supported, both internationally and domestically, grew from that. America was founded on the idea that our individual freedoms derive from God, not from government, and that government should protect those freedoms and never violate them. It does best when its people are left free to work in their individual self-interest - not meant in the sense of being selfish, but in the sense that they are left free to work to improve their own lives and the lives of their families, and for the good of their communities and of the nation as large.»
Limbaugh proclama: Reagan faz falta. Eu proclamo: Sá Carneiro faz falta.
